Structured Workplace Learning Recognition

How Does it work?

----------------------------------

What is SWLR?

Structured Workplace Learning Recognition (SWLR) is an optional VCE subject that gives students formal credit for the workplace learning they are already doing as part of their VET qualification. It is not extra work experience, it is a structured, assessed program that turns a student's SWL placement into a recognised VCE unit.

Most VM students graduate with 16 VCE units plus their VET qualification. SWLR gives eligible students the opportunity to earn an additional credit on top of that, without doing an extra subject in the traditional sense.

How does it work?

SWLR has two units.
Unit 1 and Unit 2. Each unit is worth one VCE credit. Completing both units earns two additional credits at the Unit 1 and 2 level.

Each unit requires:

  • 20 hours of scheduled classroom instruction (one lesson per week across a term, or delivered as intensive Work Ready Days)

  • 80 hours of authentic SWL placement in an industry aligned with the student's VET qualification

  • A completed Workplace Learning Record (WLR) - an official VCAA document specific to the student's VET course

There are no exams. Assessment is entirely school-based and is not reported to VCAA.

Who is eligible?

To enrol in SWLR, a student must be:

  • Concurrently enrolled in a nationally recognised VCE VET program, OR

  • Completing a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT)

The workplace industry must directly align with the student's VET qualification. Students can only complete each unit once, and Unit 2 requires a different workplace setting to Unit 1.

Schools manage SWLR enrolments and results directly in VASS. The final deadline to enter or amend Unit 1 enrolments in VASS for 2026 is Monday 16 November 2026. Initial enrolment data must be entered by Monday 23 February 2026.

What do students actually do?

Students can only complete one SWLR unit per year.

Unit 1 — AOS 1: Plan and Prepare (Term 3)
Students research their industry, identify their technical and transferable skills, build a professional learner profile, find and secure a placement, prepare for a host employer interview and complete WHS training relevant to their workplace.

Unit 1 — AOS 2: Participate and Reflect (Term 4)
Students complete their 80-hour placement, maintain their Workplace Learning Record, reflect on their VET units of competency as observed in a real workplace, develop all eight employability skills and update their career goals based on what they experienced.

What are the benefits for students?

  • An additional VCEVM credit on top of their standard 16 units - at no extra cost to their timetable when structured well

  • Formal recognition of skills developed in a real workplace

  • A completed Workplace Learning Record that documents their industry experience

  • Interview preparation and professional communication skills built into the program

  • A clearer sense of where they want to go after school - confirmed, refined or redirected by real workplace experience

  • A stronger foundation for employment, further training or apprenticeships after Year 12

What does the school need to do?

  • Enrol eligible students in SWLR on VASS by 23 February 2026

  • Assign a staff member to oversee student progress, support pre-placement preparation and evaluate post-placement reflections

  • Ensure students have commenced the WHS unit of competency from their VET qualification before starting placement

  • Submit satisfactory/not yet satisfactory results on VASS by 16 November 2026

What is the Work Ready Day model?

Rather than running one lesson per week, some schools deliver the 20 classroom hours as two dedicated Work Ready Days — one pre-placement and one post-placement. Students complete the full AOS 1 content in a focused day before their placement begins, then return for a full reflection day after placement is complete.

This model suits schools that prefer to block the learning rather than run it weekly. Contact us to find out more about how to set this up at your school.
